Cryptic started uploading type beats to YouTube in 2017 with one goal: he wanted people to recognize a Cryptic beat just by listening — no voice tags, no checking credits. Eight years later, he has a JUNO award, a placement on a Tory Lanez album through WAVS, and a production academy teaching the next generation how to get there themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The JUNO came from a sample he made in May 2022 with a friend named Joe. They knew immediately they had something. It ended up on a Snotty Nose Rez Kids record called “Kaleidoscope” and won Best Rap Album. The Tory Lanez placement came through WAVS entirely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We talked with Cryptic about how both those records came together, what he’s built with the Sound Scientist Academy, and what he actually means when he says a beat should speak for itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q:<\/strong> Who\u2019s Cryptic, how did you first emerge in the music scene, and what\u2019s your musical background like?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Cryptic<\/strong>: My goal has always been that I wanted people to recognize a Cryptic beat just by listening\u2014no voice tags, no checking credits. I started making music around 2017, got into <\/em>uploading type beats<\/a><\/em><\/span> on YouTube pretty quick, and that’s how I started building my community. I don\u2019t really have a musical background; I played a bit of guitar in first grade but everything else is self-taught. Q<\/strong>: You’ve accomplished significant milestones recently, including your JUNO award. How does this recognition feel, and has it impacted your approach or perspective on producing?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Cryptic<\/strong>: It’s amazing. I\u2019m super grateful for every achievement, no matter how big or small it is. It definitely motivates me to just keep going and never give up\u2014you never know what happens next.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
