{"id":1458,"date":"2025-08-22T23:18:42","date_gmt":"2025-08-22T23:18:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wavs.com\/blog\/?p=1458"},"modified":"2026-03-11T22:30:08","modified_gmt":"2026-03-11T22:30:08","slug":"autrioly-on-finding-his-sound","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wavs.com\/blog\/autrioly-on-finding-his-sound\/","title":{"rendered":"Autrioly: Sri Lankan Scales, Canadian Winters, and a Sound Nobody Else Has"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Autrioly grew up in Sri Lanka learning instruments from his dad, moved to Canada, spent years making hyperpop that never felt quite right, and eventually found his way to something that does &#8212; moody, vinyl-inspired samples that pull from East Asian and Western music in equal measure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Part of what makes his sound hard to place is intentional. He often tunes to 432Hz or 452Hz instead of the standard 440. It&#8217;s a small shift that changes the emotional texture of everything he makes. Producers who&#8217;ve used his samples notice it immediately, even if they can&#8217;t name it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Instagram following came after that. Where do you think that comes from?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color has-base-font-size wp-elements-d9576a4801e61e014f35a1a33af74cbe\"><strong><em>Autrioly:<\/em><\/strong> My dad was into Sri Lankan music and used to play a lot of instruments, so he taught me when I was a kid. East and South Asian music is so different from Western music, so I guess the musical conventions that feel natural to me are a blend of these two very distinct musical styles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color has-base-font-size wp-elements-8d377a38372569450acc510e47778ecf\">The other thing is that I try not to be too restricted by the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/A440_(pitch_standard)\">standard 440Hz tuning<\/a><\/span>. When you hear my samples, you\u2019ll sometimes notice you can\u2019t get them exactly in key in your DAW, and it\u2019s because I sometimes tune to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.izotope.com\/en\/learn\/tuning-standards-explained?srsltid=AfmBOoq2uTSxufe6sUZ20wL9p1IIeZELMSW6Rqi7VNFsyTrSXggTGap-\">432Hz<\/a><\/span> or 452Hz instead. Although it\u2019s just a few Hz, it can have a huge effect on the overall emotion of a song. How does your creative process differ between these two practices?<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color has-base-font-size wp-elements-6d9fc10611bb3076c9a4e921f8568606\"><strong><em>Autrioly:<\/em><\/strong> It&#8217;s different. Writing a song is about me opening up about my own life and communicating my emotions. Making a sample pack is about being creative and constructing sounds that the producer can use to make a hit, you know?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color has-base-font-size wp-elements-859a87ef72e5666ebcf03008a312c4ab\">When creating samples, I always try to be bold and find catchy hooks in terms of the melody, as that\u2019s how you capture people\u2019s attention. Samples are also more versatile than full songs, as the next producer is going to interpret and recontextualize what I\u2019ve done, but in their own way.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-base-font-size\"><strong>Q:<\/strong> <strong><strong>You mentioned <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shiloh_Dynasty\">Shiloh Dynasty<\/a><\/span>. I\u2019ve noticed people leaving comments on some of your reels, drawing comparisons between your sounds. How do you feel about those comparisons?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color has-base-font-size wp-elements-be7845d9ee40000956bf7972e73ec52f\"><strong><em>Autrioly:<\/em><\/strong> I\u2019m really flattered by that. I\u2019m inspired by her sound, but I\u2019m not <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shiloh_Dynasty\">Shiloh<\/a><\/span>, and I never will be. I don\u2019t know her creative process or what she might have experienced; I just created something that sounds similar in some ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color has-base-font-size wp-elements-65ab498d0d9b10a8b49ebdd1e880827c\">Two different people from different backgrounds and upbringings can never be the same. It\u2019s cool that some people think the samples are by her, but they\u2019re just by me. It\u2019s my emotions and what I\u2019ve experienced personally. About five years ago, I was making and releasing a lot of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theeagleonline.com\/article\/2024\/10\/genre-deep-dive-hyperpop-brings-social-commentary-with-a-high-speed-kick\">Hyperpop<\/a><\/span>, but it was never what I really wanted to do. It didn\u2019t really click with me, so I decided to change what I was doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color has-base-font-size wp-elements-98dfdf56baa20ee9a9bba193e65a4b4f\">I had been listening to XXXTENTACION from the beginning of his career, so when I decided to switch things up, I tried making music in that kind of style, and that\u2019s when Autrioly was born.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color has-base-font-size wp-elements-4a26f7d413fb662cd113c11ba8775d5b\">I was inspired not only by his music, but also by his vision, his creativity, his personality, just everything. When I listen to his music, I feel like I understand why he made certain artistic decisions. It really helped me to get in the right mindset to create similar-sounding music. When I acoustically treated my room, I didn\u2019t want to place any panels in front of the window because I don\u2019t like to feel trapped inside. I want to look outside and feel free when I create.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-base-font-size\"><strong>Q: <strong>Your reels reinforce your sonic aesthetic from a visual perspective. How long did it take you to refine that side of your image, and how has it helped you to get your sound out to more people?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color has-base-font-size wp-elements-ccd7fff6020fb7c4d36bc875f0a09343\"><strong><em>Autrioly:<\/em><\/strong> I\u2019ve always loved the vintage VHS aesthetics. I tried posting one reel that used that style, and it kind of blew up, so I just went with it. I guess the artwork for my sample packs on WAVS all feature a red-headed female, and there\u2019s always a picture of a female on my beats, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color has-base-font-size wp-elements-76416ef054b5f5f4fd8bb15373b6bfb4\">It\u2019s kind of become part of my branding, but people can also enjoy the visual while listening to the beats or samples, which is the real point of it. I think it\u2019s really worked for me with the reels format. I went from like 3k followers to 26k within a month, and it\u2019s really had an impact on the number of people checking out my work. I just go to my room, put my <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/airpods\/\">AirPods<\/a><\/span> in, and that\u2019s it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color has-base-font-size wp-elements-f003876cc35bfa77a28311b2b4de3121\">You can create anything with just those two things; you can go anywhere, and there\u2019s no messing around with your setup or anything. If you have an idea, you can just go and bring it to life immediately. AirPods are fine for production, but it\u2019s just one monitoring source, so once I\u2019m done producing, I\u2019ll bring the track to the full setup to mix it.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-base-font-size\"><strong>Q: <strong><strong><strong>So what does your full setup look like?<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color has-base-font-size wp-elements-ed94c0e3659d1d7b1e3c9e7035a06024\"><strong><em>Autrioly:<\/em><\/strong> I use <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/logic-pro\/\">Logic Pro<\/a><\/span> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.image-line.com\/fl-studio\">FL Studio<\/a><\/span>, and my audio interface is an <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uaudio.com\/products\/apollo-twin-x\">Apollo Twin<\/a><\/span>. Then I have a couple of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rode.com\/en\/about\/news-info\/what-is-a-condenser-microphone-and-when-to-use-one\">condenser mics<\/a><\/span> for recording guitars. I\u2019m also trying to figure out the whole analog-style sound, so I\u2019ve got a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hologramelectronics.com\/product-page\/chroma-console\">Chroma Console<\/a><\/span> multi-effects pedal by Hologram Electronics. I used to use stuff like <a href=\"https:\/\/output.com\/products\/portal\">Output Portal<\/a> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cableguys.com\/shaperbox\">Shaperbox by Cableguys<\/a><\/span>, but with physical controls, you can really feel what you\u2019re doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color has-base-font-size wp-elements-28aa38de9e4fd42db763678f8b0eee8b\">I recently got an <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.muzines.co.uk\/articles\/akai-gx-4000d-reel-to-reel\/4155\">Akai GX-4000D<\/a><\/span> reel-to-reel tape recorder, too. I\u2019m a big fan of tape saturation &#8211; I used to use the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arturia.com\/products\/software-effects\/tape-j37\/overview\">Arturia J37<\/a><\/span> on every master, but I\u2019ve found that having the real thing has added a lot more warmth and compression than trying to emulate that sound in the box.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-base-font-size\"><strong>Q: <strong><strong><strong><strong>The fact that you record your vocals on the built-in MacBook microphone shows that performance and talent are the most important things. Do you use any particular processes or techniques to emphasize the emotion in your vocal performances?<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color has-base-font-size wp-elements-6f107c2067255634f2249b54dda7e8e4\"><strong><em>Autrioly:<\/em><\/strong> Hmm, not really. It\u2019s not really about any particular piece of equipment or software that you can just go and buy. I always try to live inside the song I\u2019m making. If something doesn\u2019t feel authentic and relatable to me, I always hit a wall. What I write is what I feel instead of what people expect, and it\u2019s the same when I produce for other people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color has-base-font-size wp-elements-4a53ab908d59abd07e0462cf0f3fc73f\">No matter what kind of genre I\u2019m working in, I produce the music how I want to instead of chasing whatever the current mainstream sound is. I produce what I feel and what I hear. If you believe your idea is genuine and no one else can match it, that will come across in the end product.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-base-font-size\"><strong>Q: <strong><strong><strong><strong>You mentioned that you recently joined <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patreon.com\/autrioly\">Patreon<\/a><\/span>. I\u2019d say the main things are believing in yourself, staying consistent, and being authentic. In terms of actually creating samples, I\u2019ve noticed how important the first few seconds of a sample are. The same way you have to grab your listeners&#8217; attention in a Pop song, or your viewers&#8217; attention on a reel, a sample needs to be catchy and grab you in the first few seconds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color has-base-font-size wp-elements-78f36a506dead4746442924e540de1e3\">I would also say that everything is a process. Try to believe in yourself and just create. Don\u2019t try to be too mainstream, don\u2019t try to be too niche.
