Roman Shatskiy grew up in Aksay, Kazakhstan, spending a decade as a professional dancer before music pulled him in a different direction. He downloaded FL Studio the same day he watched an Internet Money video. That was a few years ago. Now he’s got a placement on a Lil Tecca album and a consistent spot at the top of the WAVS charts — under the name godoftrip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What stands out about Roman isn’t just the output. It’s the mindset. He’s methodical without being mechanical, collaborative without losing his identity, and honest about what he doesn’t know yet. When he talks about luck, he’s clear: it only shows up when you’ve already been working.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We sat down with godoftrip to talk about how the Lil Tecca record happened, his approach to sound and process, the anmrph collective, and where he’s headed next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q: For people discovering you for the first time, who\u2019s godoftrip?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

godoftrip:<\/strong> My real name is Roman Shatskiy. I\u2019m 27 years old, and I was born and raised in a small town called Aksay, Kazakhstan. My journey with music started back in childhood. I spent ten years dancing professionally, and I think that\u2019s where my sense of rhythm and my love for music really came from. I tried getting into music a few times before, but I took my first serious step at 19. I was watching one of the Internet Money videos, downloaded FL Studio that same day, and started making beats.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Q: Do you feel like you have a signature sound? What do you think about having a signature sound versus creating what\u2019s currently in demand? <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

godoftrip:<\/strong> <\/em>I believe everyone has their own signature style. Mine is built from being inspired by many different producers. I took certain elements from each of them and focused on what truly resonated with me. I listened a lot to samples from Nami<\/a><\/span>, Coop The Truth<\/a><\/span>, Akira<\/a><\/span>, Oscar Zulu, UNKWN<\/a><\/span> and many others. The artists I listen to also shaped the sound that comes from my hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So yes, I do think I have a signature style, but it\u2019s rooted in the things that inspire me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are producers who chase every new trending genre and always want to stay current instead of focusing on one recognizable sound. I understand that approach. It\u2019s just a different mindset, and there\u2019s nothing wrong with it.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
