Meet Trust Me Lucien: The 19-Year-Old Swedish Sample Maker Making Waves
In today’s interview, we sat down with Trust Me Lucien, a 19-year-old sample maker from Sweden, who’s been a part of WAVS for almost two years. His unique approach and versatility have led him to stand out in a highly competitive industry. Below is a glimpse of our conversation and how Lucien navigates his journey in music.
Q: Trust Me Lucien is an interesting name. Is that your real name?
Lucien: (Laughs) No, it’s not my real name. When I was switching from making beats to samples, I wanted a new name. My original name was just Oscxr with an X instead of the A, but that didn’t feel unique enough. So, I Googled cool Spanish names and found “Lucien.” However, the handle for Lucien wasn’t available on Instagram, so I had to come up with something before it. That’s when “Trust Me” came into the picture. It’s essentially a promise to myself, a reminder that I will get where I want to be one day.

Q: What’s your process for starting a new idea?
Lucien: I find ideas everywhere. Sometimes I wake up with a melody in my head, record it in voice notes, and later bring it into the studio. Other times, I go outside and find inspiration from beautiful places. Being in nature—whether it’s a beach or a mountain—helps me translate those visuals into music. When I came to Los Angeles for this interview, I took a couple of days just to explore the city for inspiration.

Q: What do you think makes your samples stand out sonically?
Lucien: Definitely my vocals. I’m not a great singer by any means—I’ve never had lessons—but I sing with emotion. Sometimes my vocals are out of key, but I think the raw energy is what gives my samples life. I don’t rely on perfect auto-tuning. Instead, I focus on capturing the essence and bringing my voice forward, even if it’s imperfect.

Q: What are your top three VSTs for production right now?
Lucien: Number one is Scorch, for sure. It has a wide range of preset combinations that I use to come up with new ideas. Then there’s Kontakt. As long as you have the right banks, Kontakt will always be a must-have because it constantly reinvents itself with new sounds. And finally, I’d say one-shots. I love using one-shots from producers like Eiby, CoopTheTruth, and Nami to kickstart my ideas.
