Clams Casino is the production alias of Michael Volpe, born May 28, 1987, in Nutley, New Jersey. He began making beats in high school using Cool Edit Pro and later FL Studio, inspired by J Dilla and Timbaland. He studied at Montclair State University. His early beats circulated online through MySpace and attracted the attention of rapper Lil B, for whom he produced extensively, creating the template for what became known as cloud rap.
Clams Casino's production on ASAP Rocky's "Peso" and "Bass" (from Live.Love.A$AP, 2011) and "LVL" (from Long.Live.A$AP) brought him mainstream visibility. He has produced for The Weeknd ("Tell Your Friends" from Beauty Behind the Madness), Mac Miller, Vince Staples (multiple tracks on Summertime '06), FKA Twigs, Joji, and Lil Peep. His Instrumental Mixtape series (2011-2016) released his beats as standalone ambient compositions.
His production is defined by ethereal, heavily processed vocal samples, ambient textures, reverb-drenched synths, and trap-influenced drums that create a dreamy, atmospheric sound. He pioneered the use of pitched and stretched vocal chops as melodic elements in hip-hop production, influencing a generation of producers in the cloud rap and emo rap spaces.
Signature Sound
Clams Casino pioneered cloud rap production by layering ethereal, heavily processed vocal chops over reverb-drenched ambient textures and trap drums. His beats create a dreamlike, weightless atmosphere using pitched vocal samples as melodic instruments, blurring the line between hip-hop beats and ambient electronic music.
