DJ Mustard is the production alias of Dijon Isaiah McFarlane, born June 5, 1990, in Los Angeles, California. He grew up in South Central Los Angeles and began DJing at age 12, playing house parties and quinceañeras. He started producing beats in his teens using FL Studio, developing a minimalist, ratchet-influenced sound rooted in West Coast DJ culture and the hyphy movement. He attended Hamilton High School in Los Angeles.
Mustard defined the sound of West Coast hip-hop and club music in the early-to-mid 2010s with a string of hits: YG's "My Nigga" (No. 19 Hot 100, 5x platinum), Ty Dolla $ign's "Paranoid," 2 Chainz's "I'm Different," Tyga's "Rack City" (which he was uncredited on initially), Rihanna's "Needed Me" (No. 7), and his own "Don't Hurt Me" featuring Nicki Minaj and Jeremih. His biggest commercial hit was "Pure Water" with Migos (2019). He also produced Ella Mai's "Boo'd Up" (No. 5, Grammy for Best R&B Song) and "Trip."
His production template became so widely imitated it was dubbed "the Mustard sound" or "ratchet music." It centers on sparse, synth-driven arrangements with a distinctive hi-hat pattern (typically a two-step pattern with open hats on the off-beat), minimal bass, and room for vocal hooks. He later evolved his sound with R&B-influenced production for Ella Mai and others. He founded the 10 Summers Records label.
Signature Sound
DJ Mustard created the quintessential 2010s West Coast club sound: sparse, bouncy beats built around a signature two-step hi-hat pattern, minimal bass stabs, and bright synth riffs that leave maximum space for vocal hooks. His stripped-down template prioritizes groove and danceability over complexity.
