DJ Premier is an American record producer born Christopher Edward Martin on March 21, 1966, in Houston, Texas. He is one half of the duo Gang Starr with the late rapper Guru, releasing influential albums including Daily Operation and Moment of Truth.

He has produced for Nas, including 'N.Y. State of Mind' on the 1994 album Illmatic, as well as for The Notorious B.I.G., Jay-Z, and Mos Def. He is widely regarded as one of the foremost producers in East Coast hip-hop.

His production is built on hard boom bap drums and jazz and soul loops, topped with signature choruses assembled from scratched vocal samples. He is known for working with the Akai MPC.
