Just Blaze is the production alias of Justin Smith, born January 8, 1978, in Paterson, New Jersey. He is one of hip-hop's most celebrated producers, known for anthemic, soul-sample-driven beats that helped define the sound of Roc-A-Fella Records in the early 2000s. He produced alongside Kanye West as one of the two signature producers for Jay-Z.
His credits include Jay-Z's 'Song Cry,' 'Public Service Announcement,' 'Show Me What You Got,' and 'Encore'; Eminem's 'Lighters' and 'Won't Back Down'; Kanye West's 'Touch the Sky'; T.I.'s 'Bring Em Out'; Cam'ron's 'Oh Boy'; Busta Rhymes; and Rick Ross. He also produced the beat for Drake's 'Lord Knows.' He uses the Akai MPC and is known for flipping soul samples into massive, stadium-scale instrumentals.
Just Blaze is recognized for his maximalist approach to sample-based production, layering chopped soul and gospel vocals over hard-hitting drums with a cinematic, anthem-like quality. He has been active since the late 1990s and continues to produce and DJ.
