Kaytranada is the stage name of Louis Kevin Celestin, born August 25, 1992, in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. His family relocated to Saint-Hubert near Montreal shortly after his birth. His brother Lou Phelps (with whom he forms the duo The Celestics) introduced him to FL Studio at age 14. He dropped out of high school to pursue music and support his family. He began as Kaytradamus in 2010, releasing two projects before changing his name in 2012. His viral 2013 remix of Janet Jackson's "If" broke him internationally through SoundCloud.
He came up through Montreal's Artbeat collective alongside KenLo, High Klassified, and Da-P, part of a local beat scene sometimes tagged "piu piu." He signed with XL Recordings in 2014 and DJed on Madonna's Rebel Heart Tour in 2015. His debut 99.9% (2016) won the Polaris Music Prize and Juno Award for Electronic Album of the Year, featuring Anderson .Paak, Syd, Craig David, and GoldLink. Bubba (2019) won two Grammys for Best Dance/Electronic Album and Best Dance Recording ("10%" ft. Kali Uchis), making him the first Black producer and first openly gay artist to win in that category.
His production credits include JID ("Can't Punk Me"), Alicia Keys, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, Mobb Deep, Victoria Monet ("Alright"), H.E.R. ("Bloody Waters"), Pharrell, Thundercat, and Aminé (collaborative album Kaytramine, 2023). He toured with The Weeknd on the After Hours Til Dawn tour. His influences span J Dilla, Justice, old disco, and 1990s R&B. CBC noted his "kick wave" as his telltale production fingerprint.
Signature Sound
Kaytranada blends J Dilla-influenced hip-hop swing with house, disco, and funk, built around a distinctive 'kick wave' drum pattern that creates a push-pull rhythmic tension. His beats layer bouncy, uptempo grooves with warm bass, chopped vocal samples, and retro-futuristic synth textures.
