About

Marley Marl is an American record producer born Marlon Lu'Ree Williams on September 30, 1962, in Queens, New York. A pioneer of hip-hop sampling, he produced for the Juice Crew, including MC Shan, Big Daddy Kane, Biz Markie, and Roxanne Shanté.

He produced LL Cool J's 1990 album Mama Said Knock You Out and is widely credited with helping develop the technique of sampling individual drum sounds, which influenced a generation of producers.

His production is foundational boom bap, built on hard-sampled drums and soul loops with punchy, break-driven rhythms.
