Pete Rock is an American record producer born Peter Phillips on June 21, 1970, in Mount Vernon, New York. He gained recognition as half of the duo Pete Rock & CL Smooth, whose 1992 song 'They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)' became a defining record of the era.

He has produced for Nas, Run-DMC, Public Enemy, and many others, and is frequently grouped with peers such as Large Professor and Q-Tip for pioneering jazz-sampled hip-hop production.

His sound is built from lush horn and jazz loops layered over hard drums. He is known for working with the E-mu SP-1200 and Akai MPC samplers.
