PVLACE is the production alias of Denis Berger, born August 29, 1996, in Heilbronn, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany. His name derives from "Palace," his favorite level in the video game Final Fantasy. He began producing in 2010, initially making EDM and dubstep before shifting to hip-hop around age 15. He dropped out of four schools and two apprenticeships before attending the Pop College in Stuttgart. He says he needs only a laptop and headphones to work, and deletes any beat that takes longer than 20 minutes.
Berger's breakthrough came in 2018 when he saw Southside tweet asking who was awake, sent him a Dropbox link with over 200 beats via an email address obtained from a Russian hacker for $100, and woke the next morning to 20 missed calls. Southside signed him to 808 Mafia, making him one of the first European members. His loops have appeared on Young Thug's So Much Fun ("Big Tipper"), Wiz Khalifa's Rolling Papers 2 (gold), Future's The WIZRD (gold), Juice WRLD, Gucci Mane, Ufo361, and Sierra Kidd.
PVLACE draws melodic ideas from video games, favoring what he calls "hypnotic" sounds. He says melody accounts for 80% of a good beat. He works between 11 PM and 4 AM and has built a devoted following through Instagram Live sessions and direct sample pack sales. He has visited Kanye West's GOOD Music Studios in Los Angeles. In late 2022, a public dispute arose over composition ownership and his formal membership status within 808 Mafia.
Signature Sound
PVLACE crafts hypnotic, video game-influenced melodic loops with dark atmospheric textures designed for trap production. His compositions favor eerie, repetitive melodic figures processed through heavy effects chains, creating an immersive, trance-like quality that has become widely imitated in the loop-making community.
