About

Rick Rubin is an American record producer born Frederick Jay Rubin on March 10, 1963, in Long Beach, New York. He co-founded Def Jam Recordings with Russell Simmons in his NYU dorm room in 1984. Rubin's early productions for LL Cool J (Radio), Beastie Boys (Licensed to Ill), and Run-DMC (Raising Hell, including 'Walk This Way' with Aerosmith) helped define hip-hop's first crossover era.

Rubin went on to produce landmark albums across genres: Red Hot Chili Peppers' Blood Sugar Sex Magik and Californication, Johnny Cash's American Recordings series, Jay-Z's The Blueprint and 99 Problems, Kanye West's Yeezus, System of a Down's Toxicity, Slayer's Reign in Blood, and Adele's 21 and 25. He has won eight Grammy Awards, including Producer of the Year twice (2007 and 2009), and co-produced the Beastie Boys' debut Licensed to Ill, the first rap album to top the Billboard 200.

Rubin's approach is famously minimalist. He strips productions to essential elements, often serving more as a creative editor and curator than a traditional hands-on producer. He runs American Recordings and is known for extended periods of meditation and his philosophy that the producer's role is to create an environment where artists do their best work.

Signature Sound
Rick Rubin's production philosophy centers on radical reduction, stripping songs to their essential emotional core. He serves more as creative editor than traditional beat maker, creating environments where artists deliver their most raw, honest performances with minimal sonic embellishment.
