Sevn Thomas is the production alias of Rupert Thomas Jr., born July 7, 1991, in the Scarborough district of Toronto, Ontario. Of Jamaican heritage, he grew up immersed in dancehall and reggae through his parents' competing sound systems (Lover's Choice and Love Choice International). His uncle, dancehall artist Rappa Robert, took him to studio sessions in Jamaica including at UB40's studio. He started making beats on a Korg Triton in grade 5 and released a single at age 10 as Suga Prince featuring Master T. Thomas was mentored by Boi-1da and competed against WondaGurl in the 2012 Battle of the Beat Makers, which WondaGurl won. He co-produced Rihanna's "Work" (No. 1 Hot 100 for 9 weeks, diamond certified) alongside Boi-1da and Allen Ritter, created at Drake's house in LA during a multi-day session. Additional credits include Drake's "10 Bands," "Pop Style" (ft. Kanye & Jay-Z), "Chicago Freestyle," Travis Scott's "Wake Up" and "Houstonfornication" (Astroworld), Nicki Minaj's "Run & Hide" (Queen), Lil Wayne's Tha Carter V, Jay-Z and Beyonce's Everything Is Love, Giveon's "Heartbreak Anniversary" (he executive produced Take Time), and Kanye West's "Real Friends." Thomas describes his philosophy as Caribbean-influenced bounce combined with atmospheric production. He draws on reggae, dancehall, trap, and R&B without genre limitations. He told The FADER his attention to rhythmic bounce "is one of the things that sets me apart from other producers."
