About

Southside is the production alias of Joshua Howard Luellen, born February 2, 1989, in the southeast section of Atlanta, Georgia. He started making beats at age 14 after receiving his first computer from his uncle, citing Lil Jon as his favorite producer with additional influence from Pharrell, Shawty Redd, and Drumma Boy. He was discovered by Waka Flocka Flame at 17, signed to 1017 Records through Gucci Mane, and earned his first major credit on "Fuck the Club Up" from Flocka's Flockaveli (2010).

In 2010, Southside co-founded 808 Mafia with Lex Luger and later TM88, building it into one of hip-hop's most prolific production collectives. He co-produced "Illest Motherfucker Alive" on Kanye West and Jay-Z's Watch the Throne (2011), and became Future's go-to producer, handling a quarter of Monster (2014) and nine of ten tracks on 56 Nights (2015), reportedly completing that project's worth of beats in a single night. The Future collab "Commas" went gold. His 2022 single "Hold That Heat" with Future and Travis Scott was his first Billboard Hot 100 entry.

Southside claims to complete a beat in under six minutes. His primary tag is a pitched-up voice saying his name, plus the 808 Mafia tag and a sample from the Ironside TV theme by Quincy Jones. He uses aggressive, minimal trap structures with heavy 808 kicks, sharp snares, and menacing synth leads.

Signature Sound
Southside builds aggressive, minimal trap instrumentals centered on punishing 808 kicks, sharp snare hits, and menacing synth leads. His production is stripped-down and confrontational, built for maximum impact with minimal elements, often completed in under six minutes.
