The Alchemist is the production alias of Alan Daniel Maman, born October 25, 1977, in Beverly Hills, California. Of Jewish descent, with his father having emigrated from Israel, he grew up around hip-hop and began DJing as a teenager. He started producing in the early 1990s and gained his first major credits through work with Mobb Deep, producing tracks on Infamy (2001) and Blood Money (2006). He served as Eminem's touring DJ for years before landing his first placement on an Eminem solo album, co-producing "Stepdad" on Music to Be Murdered By (2020).

Alchemist has built one of the most respected underground catalogs in hip-hop, producing extensively for Griselda Records artists Westside Gunn, Benny the Butcher, and Boldy James (their collaborative album Bo Jackson, 2021, is considered a modern classic). He has produced for Nas, Jadakiss, Dilated Peoples, Evidence (as a duo in Step Brothers), Action Bronson (multiple collaborative projects including Rare Chandeliers), Freddie Gibbs (Alfredo, 2020, with a Grammy nomination), and Earl Sweatshirt.

His production is defined by obscure, often psychedelic sample sources (Brazilian records, Bollywood soundtracks, Italian library music, Turkish funk), meticulously chopped over boom-bap drums. He runs his own label ALC Records and the ADRENALINE series of instrumental projects. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest sample-based producers in hip-hop history, with a career spanning over 25 years.
